MT AIRY, MD – October 30, 2026 – PRESSADVANTAGE –
A federal recall involving a propane fireplace insert has renewed attention to outdoor heating safety as cooler weather approaches. Cedarbrook Outdoor Design/Build, which designs and builds fire pits and outdoor fireplaces in central Maryland, is highlighting precautions associated with five options: wood-burning fire pits, outdoor fireplaces, chimneys, portable propane patio heaters, and outdoor electric heaters.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled approximately 100 Snow Peak Takibi propane inserts and lava-rock sets, model ST-332-US. The recall notice says the rocks can ignite and explode when heated inside the insert. One incident caused minor property damage, and no injuries were reported. Owners should stop using the affected insert and rocks and follow the CPSC’s remedy instructions. The compatible Pack & Carry Fireplace itself was not recalled.

The notice concerns a specific product, not propane heating equipment as a whole. Equipment owners should check model numbers, fuel types, manufacturer instructions, and current recall notices rather than rely on broad product categories.
For wood-burning fire pits, placement is a primary safety consideration. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends a level, noncombustible surface and safe distance from siding, decks, railings, vegetation, and overhead structures. Fires should be supervised until fully extinguished, with extra caution during windy or dry conditions.
Outdoor fireplaces also require attention to fuel systems, accessories, and installation requirements. The recalled Snow Peak insert is designed for certain portable fireplaces. The recall does not cover masonry fireplaces, prefabricated outdoor fireplaces as a category, or every propane-powered fire feature. Before adding an insert or changing fuel, owners should confirm compatibility with the manufacturer and determine whether local approval is required.
Chimineas have their own requirements despite their enclosed design. The NFPA advises checking local restrictions, keeping combustible materials at a safe distance, supervising fires, and extinguishing them before leaving the area.
Portable propane patio heaters require users to follow instructions for clearance, ventilation, inspection, ignition, shutdown, and storage. Hoses should be protected from damage, and heaters should be turned off when the area is unoccupied. Not every model is approved for covered or partially enclosed spaces.
Outdoor electric heaters avoid propane cylinders but still require proper placement and electrical precautions. Equipment should be listed for its intended use, with appropriate clearance and attention to tip-over risks for portable models. Wiring and receptacles must meet the manufacturer’s requirements, and cords must be protected from damage.
Mount Airy spans Frederick and Carroll counties, so the property’s address matters when checking local fire rules. Within town limits, local code prohibits open burning of leaves, yard waste, trash, and other combustible waste, as well as outdoor fires that violate state law. Those provisions do not automatically establish whether a recreational fire is permitted at a particular property. Cedarbrook Outdoor Design/Build designs and builds custom fire pits and outdoor fireplaces, including portable fire-pit options.
